TRANSITIONING TO A CLEAN BEAUTY ROUTINE

Back HERE, we shared about how JP and I are beginning to transition to living a more simple life and really, into minimalism.  We've also written about how we've wanted to switch to all natural body care products due to some of my severe health issues so I thought I'd share some of the progress we've made thus far. I read somewhere that it takes only 26 seconds for chemicals in your personal care products to enter your bloodstream and it makes me so happy to know that I am no longer exposing myself to any toxic chemicals. We have enough chemicals in our foods, our water, the air we breathe, but I digress. If you have any suggestions for natural/chemical free products, I'd love to hear from you. We don't have it all figured out, but we're learning!

FACE + HAND WASH

My naturopathic physician suggested DR. BRONNER'S PURE CASTILE SOAP with heavy dilution. She says she uses it to wash her hair, body, face, hands, and it also works great as an all-purpose cleaner for dishes, laundry, floors, toilets, etc. Even the dog can be bathed using it! Talk about a space saver in your cleaning products! The cashier at Natural Grocers suggested that we use LIFE-FLO'S FRACTIONATED COCONUT OIL in conjunction with the soap as a skin moisturizer.

BODY WASH

DR. BRONNER'S PURE CASTILE SOAP (dilute, dilute, dilute!)

BAR SOAP

We're still using the Dove White Bar Soap for sensitive skin and I just can't justify spending $5+ on one of Dr. Bronner's bar soaps. We love soaps from the BEND SOAP COMPANY, but they are just too expensive. At some point we may just stop using bar soap all together, but we haven't quite made the change yet.

TOOTH PASTE

TOM'S OF MAINE. At first, I was hesitant about using an organic "unknown" so to speak, toothpaste, but when I heard that in 1995 Tom's became the first natural toothpaste to win the approval of the American Dental Association, my fears were diffused. It is very reasonably priced and works. I'm sold.

TOOTH BRUSH

Right now we're using standard plastic ones given to us by our dentist but we're interested in going to bamboo. Any suggestions? I've found THIS one online, does anyone have any experience with something similar? Do the bristles feel much different than the ones on the plastic brushes? Do they work any better? Do they last any longer?

DEODORANT

Randomly I found a company here in the states called SOAP REVOLT NATURALS on ETSY while I was searching for something else entirely and came across their ALL NATURAL DEODORANT.  The ingredients were simple so I thought I'd take a chance and try it out. I find that it actually smells very nice, seems to work pretty well initially, but I do need to apply it about three times a day (once in the morning, at lunchtime, and then right before karate). For some, you may not need to use quite so much but I do sweat a lot. I have hormonal issues, what can I say. It feels very clean on my skin and I've even thought about trying to make it myself. On Pinterest I have found a DIY ZERO WASTE DEODORANT from TRASH IS FOR TOSSERS so I might try that one first. I've also tried TOM'S OF MAINE but it felt greasy on my skin and it didn't work very well at all. I think it lasted less than an hour and I wanted to reapply.

SHAVING CREAM

Ok, so technically I'm still using regular shaving cream, I believe the company is Skintimate, but as soon as it runs out I will be using the body wash I wrote about up above. There is just something about throwing away a perfectly good product that rubs me the wrong way. Once it's used up, I simply won't replace it.

LOTION

Organic Coconut Oil. It helps to lock in moisture and makes my skin silky smooth. Seriously, I highly recommend it! My massage therapist says she uses it with her clients and suggests it for daily use.

MAKE-UP

The only make-up I use is from MAC but I want to look into all natural mineral make up. I wear it so rarely, that to me this is not really a priority at the moment. For example, I probably wear make-up once a month, if that. Sometimes I can go for a few months before I put it on. It is really for special occasions.

HAIR BRUSH

As recent as last week, I just purchased a handmade green sandalwood wooden comb from Anself (on Amazon) and I can't wait to try it out! It should arrive sometime next week.

DRESSER TURNED TV STAND MAKEOVER

Tonight, I am so excited to share with you what hubby has been working on for the last few months in his spare time.  Let me preface by saying that we've had our TV hanging on the wall above our fire place since we purchased it about a year ago.  And though I liked it there and it fit well, it wasn't exactly what I had in mind.  You see, while the TV is on and you're sitting on the sofa curled up in a warm blanket drinking hot tea, you can't have the gas fireplace running.  Not only do I use the TV for viewing movies and television shows, but I listen to a lot of music through it.  I love our fireplace but would love it more if I could use it!  So to solve that problem I was on a mission to find a nice TV stand. After searching online and finding a lot of great furniture options, I realized I didn't really want to spend any money.  We had a dresser gifted to my husband years ago that we were planning on selling or donating but I really wanted to find a new u

DIY HOMEMADE MOD PODGE

We all know how expensive Mod Podge is at the craft store, right?  And since there are so many projects which use it, I thought I could find a homemade version  online .  Love  pinterest !  This is seriously the easiest DIY project I have ever done. Supplies: A Jar (I rescued an empty Tostitos Creamy Spinach Dip Jar YUMMM which was on its way out to be recycled) Elmer's White Glue (I used two 4 fl oz bottles) Water Before I made the Mod Podge, I washed out the jar and spray painted the lid silver.  I also took off the label from the jar and did my best to get rid of all of the adhesive (first tried a paper towel and rubbing alcohol, but it didn't work and then I tried olive oil and it worked like a charm). Instructions: Empty glue into jar Fill the empty glue bottle with water and pour into the new jar with the glue  (Ideally, you want 50% glue and 50% water) Shake, Shake, SHAKE the jar That's it!  You have made homemade mod pod

TWO YEARS | remembering our miscarriage

We all have that day. The day when our world changed forever. For us, it was the day we lost our little one. I don't cry much anymore, but I remember. The pain isn't raw as it once was, but I will never forget. I remember the day I found out I was pregnant. The day I told my husband he was a daddy to be. I remember the dreams we had for this baby. Our hopes. Our plans. Our future. I remember our normally un-snuggly dog coming up to me and nuzzling her head under my arm pit, resting her head on my belly as if she knew there was a little life growing inside of me. I remember the prayers. So many prayers. We prayed every night for this baby of ours. For their future. For their health. For their life. The unbelievable love. The warmth of the sun and the smell in the air. I remember the darkness descending. The blood. The emergency room. The tests. The feelings of fear. The spoken words. The reality dawning. The unimaginable pain. The surgery. The pain isn't
